I recently took my wife to the movies and didn’t pay a cent. I won a competition that’s why. I filled up my car the other day and paid four cents less per litre than everyone else… why? Because I used a voucher. Sure, it may make some people feel cheap… it doesn’t for me. I believe that I should never pay full price for anything. No, not even petrol. Some people however are always ashamed to use vouchers. Not me.
I have been to Seaworld on a voucher someone else gave me, bought many free donuts, not to mention coffee and heaps and heaps of things. I even have been known to pick up vouchers off the floor from others and use their vouchers as well. Now I am not necessarily saying that these things are right or that you should follow people around hunting for their vouchers. I am saying vouchers are good and should be used. Don’t let your pride stand in the way of a bargain… use vouchers!

I am watching the Australian version of so you think you can dance and a thought occurred to me. A lot of people settle for dreams that people feed them. I think you should not settle for what other people want from you. Look inside your own heart and follow that. Don’t settle for somebody else’s missed opportunity. So many people live a life where they think they are doing things to please other people. This is not a healthy way to live. Build your own dreams… don’t settle for those which come from others.
There is a saying with age comes wisdom… I am here to tell you that is a croc. It’s built on the assumption that you will get smarter as you get older. Of course you will… IF YOU LEARN. If you don’t learn from your mistakes you will be as dumb as you were 50 years ago. I know plenty of people who have aged and are still dealing with the same issues on a daily basis. From a distance you can just see they won’t learn from their mistakes. Hey, before you say anything I am in the same boat. You only get ‘wisdom’ through the learning you get when you reflect on what you have and move forward. Don’t look at what you have done, milk it for the lessons and don’t make the same mistakes again. You will get wisdom ‘with’ age at an alarming rate if you have the capacity to learn.
LOL! I live in Australia (woo) and at the moment a bunch of our cricketers are quitting. It’s so funny how they are saying stuff like they just felt it was the right time. What a place to be in to make that choice. For some reason during this time I started singing this ad! If you can take anything from this ad it’s this: know when it’s time to change and take the guts to do it. I loved Schweppes Cola by the way! I know this post is short and meaningless but that’s me baby.
There is this opinion that to be in business you to be a first class jerk. I don’t know about you but why would you want to think this way? I really don’t think you need to be a jerk to survive in business. I can tell you from personal experience that it can be a cut throat world out there… but remember if you live by the sword you will die by the sword. There are many examples of how in the modern world people are not jerks and are doing well in business. I will leave it up to you to find them.
We have to move forward from the greed inspired motives and bring back the heart to business. What happened to businesses supporting local communities? I know some do and I realise that what I am saying may be (unfortunately) generalised. But it’s getting worse in my opinion. We have this stupid image of business as harsh, tough and cutthroat. Why?
It’s time for a change. I hear read story after story of people who are willing to be a jerk in business and they say things like, ‘It’s business’. I am arguing here for an embodiment of ethics not just a consideration of them. It’s quite one thing to say you are business person with heart but another to be living and breathing it. Why don’t you give it a go?
I hit 30 last year and for some strange reason I have been evaluating my life. I have been looking at the options trying to think through what I could do and what I feel I should be doing (see my previous post). I asked my wife the pertinent question: “What do you think I am good at?” She replied with… you are good at bullshit. I asked for a clarification and apparently she didn’t mean speaking it but knowing it. Knowing what is ‘bullshit’ and what is not. So ever wondered what you are good at? Maybe you are good at bullshit?
I have not been able to read fiction for something like two years. I have to really force myself to do it. My wife turned to me when I told her this and said, ‘Maybe it’s because you think that’s what you should be doing’. I think she may be right.
So while I sort that out why not ask yourself the question… what should I be doing? Not, what do I have to do… but what should I be doing? This question looks for things you need to focus your faith on to realise. Take it from me if you don’t you will still want it this time next year!
