Lifeline Bookfest 2008: June Edition

stuff No Comments »

Well it’s that time of year and the Lifeline Bookfest is on again in Brisbane.  Can I say that this is first time I am not going since about 2002.  The bottom line is I can’t afford it this time and I have no more room for books dammit!  I am not that much of an SEO king but if you are searching for the link to the official site click this one:

If you can afford it’s a worthwhile event.  If you are book lover like me it’s well worth your time.  In runs at the Southbank Convention centre from Today (June 7th) until Tuesday (June 10th).  Remember the last day is “fill a bag day” where you can get books at various prices.   I have heard of people flying interstate to attend and the odd person coming from overseas!  If you can get there it’s well worth it.

When reality is weird: My school for the gifted moment

school for the gifted

I have a cup that was given to me with this (shown above) picture on it. Thanks Gary Larson (he didn’t give me the cup I just really like the picture). So I was leaving the tea room looking at the picture and laughing to myself when a person leaving the building did exactly the same thing as in on my cup! At first I laughed then I realised that the picture on the cup had taken the form of an Indian fellow having a school for the gifted moment. It was really weird. After that I worked on rejigging the study guide for my Business Informatics course. That was probably a lot more normal.

Choice or Free will - a one minute answer

belief systems, problem solving, stuff, thought experiments No Comments »

The ability to choose or a chosen ability?  Is it destiny, fate or what we make of it?  When you make choices is it you making the choice or some offensive simulacra?

The answer to this question of course is not answerable in this blog post.  Now I did promise to write about rhetoric and use of it in the question form.  So why not deal with a very basic rhetorical question?  A rhetorical question is one that demonstrates something in the hearer that provokes them to look for the answer in the question.  Here is an example:

If a man asks for bread from God he won’t get a snake will he?

That’s what I like about the New American Standard Bible.  It has questions in it that I never noticed before.   Here’s a better example:

Why do we keep on fighting?

The causal explanation of that question gives rise to more than one possible answer.   What about this one:

If I didn’t have a free will I couldn’t type this sentence could I?

You may argue:

How do you know the sentence was pre-determined?

Both statements are designed for maximum rhetorical effect.  The really don’t have a one-minute answer do they?  Sorry.  Somebody once said that problem solving isn’t so much about finding the right answers as it is about asking the right questions.  Questions that give rise to solutions that in turn give rise to more questions is what real problem solving is about.

That’s MY Brisbane… 20 Redbacks and a house full of mice and cockroaches… lovely!

redbacks

Holy crap!  This image comes courtesy of a blog I stumbled.  The other day I was getting out of the car and saw one of these buggers right near the drivers side.  I was like WHAT!  So I got my trusty can of fly spray out and 20 of the suckers came out of the bricks near the carport!

When I saw this picture I thought… the ones I killed WERE BIGGER! Add this to the mice plague I have and the cockroaches I have in my house and you see my fight with pests.  Why wouldn’t you live in Brisbane?  Perfect one day, deadly the next!

Don’t even get me started on the snakes!

Common Misconceptions: Cheaters never prosper

Cheaters never prosper

I would like to think that people who cheat never win but it’s usually only when they get caught that we find out what they have been up to.  Cheating is indeed a what of life for some people.  When you are honest it pays fairly at least for a while… until you are exposed to corruption.  Would you take a bribe?  I would love to think that people who cut corners, take money, rip off people and stab people in the back would pay for it.  But ultimately it’s unfair to say that cheaters never prosper… they often do and wind up owning large corporations.  Those of us who have a sense of fair play don’t always wind up where we should.  Sometimes we wind up dead or in jail!  Life is pretty far from fair.   A sense of fairness and justice it’s a good thing but it’s a misconception to say that cheaters NEVER prosper.  They often do… with devastating results.

I have made a new page up the top right hand corner called services. At this stage it’s an on-going project. But there is one service available. I have a basic forum with on-going seminars and tools for $49.95 a month. You can access these via the link in the services tab. If you want to learn more about it click here.

The reason for this is simple… I am dedicated to reaching my full potential. I do not want to die with the music still in me… I am 2/3 of the way towards reaching a place where I believe I am doing what I can do to put my stuff out there… the rest, as they say, is up to God.

I hope you check it out… any questions just ask me.
