Life in the slow lane: The life of an unpublished writer

Imagine, waking up in the morning with a burning desire to share your talent with the world. You jump out of bed full of hope rushing to your coffee machine. As you take your first sip of coffee you realise that your idea wasn’t as good as you thought it was, maybe you are on the wrong track. After all, you have 300 rejection slips from literary agents on your wall that can’t be wrong can they? Welcome to the life of an unpub.

Life in the slow lane

Those of us who struggle to get noticed often find ourselves in the world without a home. It’s life in the slow lane. We write in hope and dread the mail. Life is not like a box of chocolates for us, it’s one crushing defeat after another. I have heard it said, ‘Son, if you are good enough you will get published.’ Nonsense. Great writers have gone to their grave unsatisfied and hungry.

What can we do about it?

I am not sure the future is all that bright for unpubs. More downturns in the fiction industry following on from the Harry Potter Craze are likely. What we need are more innovative, strategic and creative ideas. We need to be able to spread our art and share it because it’s our hearts work. The creative parts of this world are no longer operating and I for one think it’s time something changed. I had hoped the writers strike would make a difference but alas it hasn’t really has it?

So, this short post reminds me… I have a chapter to tweak, a job to go to … a family to feed. Writing for pleasure is fun but why can’t I also do it for profit?

    Hey Luke,

I’d leave you a tip right now if I could.

Have you thought about a PayPal tip jar? (idea donated instead of tip = idiot ;)

  2. Thanks Alan. You know I hadn’t thought of that… I might use it if you don’t mind. Interesting concept. Thanks
